4 Questions to Ask as You Search for a Brand Photographer
Let me take a wild guess: You follow dozens of photographers as you find them on the ‘gram, but now they are all in the sea of your following list, never to be looked through again. Or you might have even found brand photographers specifically, but still they’re lost in your unending following list. Or if you’re one step ahead and you’ve looked through a few websites, you’ve had the fleeting thought that you’re not as beautiful or organized or far enough in your business or _____ (insert all the excuses here!) as the business owners featured.
Ready for the hard truth that so many of us can’t internalize?
When looking through a photographer’s galleries,
remember that your brand’s secret sauce is YOU.
It’s ok if you’re not as smiley as the people featured. Maybe you dress differently, or you love bright colors. Maybe you love the nitty gritty side of working on your craft, rather than perfectly posed photos of you in “professional” clothes. Your session is meant to be uniquely about you, so instead look for this:
1 | Did they capture the business owner the way you would like yourself to be captured? (Documentary style or more posed, maybe a combo?)
2 | Are the images consistent in editing style and in focus? (Consistency, rather than style, is the focus here. Your brand is the most important thing, so editing can be changed to fit your aesthetic easily. If a photographer can be consistent in their own brand style, they should be able to be consistent with yours.)
3 | Do you like their way of composing images in various shooting situations? (Indoor, outdoor, clean backdrops, bustling backgrounds)
4 | Would you mesh well personality wise? You’ll enjoy the process a whole lot more if you like him or her as a person. And plus, if you plan on photos every quarter, bi-annually, or annually, you’ll be spending a lot of time together.
