I recently photographed seasonal offerings for a natural skincare company, and I thought it would be fun to interview the owner, Sabrina, and learn more about natural skincare products from her perspective. I had the pleasure of meeting Sabrina through another client, whom I had met through Jasmine Star’s membership Social Curator. Curators are a special group of people, and I absolutely love when I can work with a Curator in helping to build up their business!
Sabrina is a wife and a mom of three, with such an infectious smile, and the biggest heart for others. She has been a huge advocate of a natural lifestyle and diet for many years, and works tirelessly to raise her kids to appreciate that way of life – when the world is still filled with not-so-great options. I’m so honored to be able to call her a friend now as well. Without further ado, take it away Sabrina!
KS: What started you on the natural skincare journey?
I always had an interest in natural products, even a decade ago when I was a full time hairstylist. I always preferred the natural coloring line with no ammonia and coconut oil before coconut oil was so common. Fast forward to marrying my amazing husband – we decided that we wanted to have a parent at home, so after we had our first son, I was at home and I had time to really research healthier lifestyles with food, exercise, and products.
I found Dave Asprey’s podcast and his Bulletproof Coffee, and I listened to all of his interviews with holistic doctors and other leaders in the industry before the natural movement was such a big deal. I had always thought I had sensitive skin, but I learned through those interviews that I was using products that were irritating me, rather than products that were helping my skin. Then, I purchased a completely natural face cream from someone that was interviewed, and it worked so well for me! But having only one income and young kids at home, I knew I couldn’t sustain buying that long term. I knew it worked, but I also knew I and my family and friends couldn’t afford this option either. So I started experimenting with all of my knowledge and making natural body butter, and giving it to everyone for Christmas gifts (you get very creative with small gift budgets!) When I started the business, I made it a company value that I was going to make products that are affordable, multi-functional, clean, and natural.
KS: When did you know you wanted to make this a business?
I had a friend come to me and I’ll always remember how serious her face was when she said “you have to sell this.” It wasn’t even on my mind as an idea and she said, “This is amazing and it could help so many people!” She planted that seed when my kids were still very young, and I didn’t have enough headspace to do it then, but now that the kids are older, it’s been such a blessing to build a business around something I’m so passionate about.
KS: What ingredients do you see out on the shelves that just make you crazy that all of us don’t even realize are so bad for our systems?
A lot of products have carcinogens and parabens included under a ton of different names, but what really frustrates me is that there are a lot of natural lines that have come out in the last few years, and they’re pretty good, but where they go wrong is that they use a chemical carcinogenic preservative, not a natural preservative. I’m very stubborn and determined when it comes to finding clean ingredients, so I researched like heck to find completely natural preservatives like radish root extract. Next time you go to buy something, pull out your phone and just type the ingredients into a search engine to see what comes up. You’ll be surprised what can pass through for mass consumption.
KS: If someone came to you wanting to try one natural product, what would you suggest switching first?
I would suggest your face cream because you’re using it at day and night, and there is nothing like having hydrated skin! Why not try a natural option?
KS: What has been your biggest takeaway from 2020 as a business owner?
I realized how much I love my business and how I love that I can help people during these hard times. But it was also important to learn how to be flexible and very creative in dealing with whatever comes my way. I think that every business owner can agree after 2020!
KS: Any parting thoughts?
Become your own bio hacker. Really pay attention to what you’re putting on your body and in your body, and how your body and skin reacts to it, because everyone’s different. No one knows you like you do!
